For years, Patagonia has been regarded as a leading brand for outdoor gear and acknowledged as pioneers in the industry of sustainable clothing. Each year, Patagonia adds more pieces to their collection and continues to up their efforts in sustainability and strives to further reduce their carbon footprint. While clothing is what they are most well known for, Patagonia also offers a wide range of swim and athletic gear, perfect for a day on the water. This summer, I had the opportunity to try out a couple of swim pieces from Patagonia. Here are my thoughts.
Nanogrip Nireta Bikini Top & Bottom
The Nanogrip Nireta top is a supportive, full-coverage surf top with soft, removable padding. Unique to this suit is the slip resistance lining on the inner edges that prevents unwanted movement when wet, an invaluable feature. The Nireta bottoms are low-rise performance swim and surf bottoms that provide moderate coverage and also feature a blended microfiber lining for slip resistance. Both pieces are Fair Trade sewn and solids are made from a blend of 83% recycled nylon/17% spandex while prints are made from 83% recycled polyester/17% spandex.
The Nanogrip Nireta bikini is one of the best surf suits I’ve worn to date. The size charts available online are accurate and the suits fits snug and secure. The full-coverage top keeps everything in place while the bottoms provide just the right amount of coverage for optimal flattery and performance. The microfiber anti-slip lining is something I’ve yet to come across in a piece of swimwear but is a game changer for keeping the suit securely in place. Big surf, long paddles, or lounging on the beach, the Nanogrip Nireta bikini is ready for any and every environment.

Bottom Turn Bikini Top & Sunamee Bottoms
Made from soft, stretchy material, the Bottom Turn top features a racerback design and removable padding for maximum stability. The suit includes a scoop neckline and an open back, allowing for full range of movement while paddling. The Sunamee bottoms are Patagonia’s classic full-coverage bottoms that include hidden elastic at the leg and waist openings for a secure yet comfortable fit.
Like the Nanogrip suit, the Bottom Turn top and Sunamee bottoms are Fair Trade sewn and are made from 83% recycled nylon/17% spandex for solids and 83% recycled polyester/17% spandex for prints. I loved the contrasting colors on the top and the open back and scooped neckline made this style comfortable enough to wear all day long yet stayed securely in place while in the water. The bottoms are soft and comfy and unlike most bikinis, provide full coverage so you can be confident in the fit of your suit. Like everything Patagonia makes, the quality in this bikini is evident and it was made to perform well in all conditions.
Barely Baggie Shorts
Based on the design of Patagonia’s Baggies shorts, the Barely Baggies have a lower rise and shorter inseam than the originals. The shorts feature an elastic waistband, inner drawcord, side-entry pockets with mesh for drainage, a hidden top-entry mesh pocket, side slits on each leg, and an elastic key-loop in the right-front pocket. Made from 100% recycled nylon with a durable water repellent finish, these shorts are sturdy enough for hiking yet perfect for long days on and in the water.
Stretch Planing Micro Shorts
The micro boardshorts are light, breezy, and versatile, making them the perfect shorts for almost any activity you throw their way. Made from a quick-drying and superlight 100% recycled polyester, the Micro Shorts feature a waistband with two-way adjustment, a secure zippered back pocket, and inner elastic key loop, and a mesh draining panel. These shorts are the comfiest pair of board shorts I’ve every worm and they dry super quickly, making them perfect for wet and wild adventures.
