The Fenix CL30R Camping Lantern is an amazing compact little camp lantern with an impressive capability of projecting up to 650 lumens over a 115 ft diameter area depending on which of its versatile six modes you chose to use at any given time. I had the opportunity to extensively test a Fenix CL30R over the past few weeks and really enjoyed its modern design and superior performance compared to my previous camp lantern from another manufacturer. Most recently, I used the lantern this past weekend while camping out during the Pacific Paddle Games in Dana Point, California.

The stocky and rugged camp lantern is easily switched on and off with the press of a button, which in the case of the Fenix CL30R is an easy to use, heavy-duty orange rubber button. The ON/OFF button is designed to be used with the push of your thumb – not too small and not over-sized.
Cycling through the six modes is accomplished by single clicks on the ON/OFF button once the lantern is turned on. There are not additional buttons or easily damaged switches to worry about with this model. The manufacturers have kept the design simple, functional and focused on maximizing the camp lantern’s ease of use.
The compact design of the Fenix CL30R allows it to be easily packed in a rucksack for a trip. I would not necessarily take this model backpacking, it weighs 14.5 oz (412g) without the batteries, but for a car camping trip this lantern is an excellent option. The CL30R features a lanyard ring on top as well as a tripod mount on the bottom giving it a range of lighting options on or off the ground. The lantern is ruggedly designed, e.g. this guy is built for the outdoors, and while I would not intentionally drop it on the rocks from a great height, the lantern can survive the impact of a fall to the ground if accidentally dropped or knocked off a picnic table – provided the initial point of impact isn’t the lantern’s light shade. Even then, the light shade feels has a rugged look and feel which will most likely withstand some abuse.
One of the aspects I like the best about the Fenix CL30R is the soft white light it emits. Even when on the max 650 lumen setting, the light is easy on the eyes and does not cause you to constantly adjust your vision when moving in and out of the area illuminated by the lantern.
The CL30R is fully rechargeable via a micro-USB charging cable (included). The micro-USB recharging port also enables you to use the camp lantern to charge another device – a handy feature when spending long periods of time outdoors.
