Outrigger ocean adventure

Lanakila Outrigger Canoe Club in Redondo Beach, California treated members of the public to free outrigger canoe rides around King Harbor over this past Labor Day weekend. The initiative was conducted in partnership with SoCal Toyota dealers and proved to be a tremendous success as over 800 participants enjoyed paddling, lei making and the opportunity to sample Hawaiian food.

The initiative was a component of the bi-annual Fiesta Hermosa, held each Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend. Members of the public were greeted at the the Hermosa Beach Pier by Lanakila members and SoCal Toyota representatives. After signing a waiver they were whisked away by SoCal Toyata to King Harbor where club members eagerly awaited. Participants were then sized for paddles and life jackets and given basic instruction on paddling before they were escorted down a red carpet to one of several outrigger canoes making near continuous loops around the harbor.

At the completion of their outrigger adventure, participants were shuttled back to the Hermosa Beach pier by SoCal Toyota where they departed with new memories of their time on the water. Many participants had never been out on the water much less in an outrigger canoe. The resident colony of California Sea Lions did their part to captivate the attention of paddlers and a dolphin or two even popped in to check out all the action.
