Gear Review: From a Paddle to the Promenade, Walk All Day in Telic Sandals

by admin

In a time when most footwear is made in inexpensive labor markets overseas, Telic’s slogan, “What Made in America Feels Like”, is a prelude for demonstrating a quality product which can still be affordably made in the United States. Founded on July 4, 2012 in Boise, Idaho by a family of Italian-Americans whose heritage is steeped in the shoe making industry, Telic sandals are a comfortable and colorful entry to a footwear market too often dominated by variations on a theme.

Known as “America’s best recovery shoe” and winner of the Reader’s Choice Awards for “best comfort shoe”, Telic footwear is made from Novalon™, a body-heat activated, waterproof, feather-light material that is durable, elastic, and soft. They are available in five styles and an array of colorful options.

SUP Examiner’s Take

I was introduced to Telic at the Outdoor Retailer trade show earlier this month and accepted their offer to test a pair of Deep Ocean colored flip flops. It was day three of the five-day affair and my feet readily welcomed the soft, supportive cushioned soles of the Telic sandals after walking miles around the trade show floor. In fact, I liked them so much I wore them for the remainder of the show.

As a Southern California paddler, I pretty much live in flip flops. I have an indoor pair that I wear around the house, my “dress flip flops” consisting of a comfortable leather pair from Merrell and then the countless number of everyday outdoor sandals. As anyone who spends a lot of time in flip flops knows, the footwear can be hard on your knees over time as the material in the soles gradually breaks down or perhaps never existed in sufficient quantity to begin with.

The first thing I noticed (and liked) about the footwear was the extra cushion in the sandal’s arch support. Where other manufacturers focus on adding cushion to the heal, Telic places it where it is needed the most. The result is an unrivaled level of comfort that will make you think you are wearing a specialized orthopedic shoe and not a pair of flip flops you just emerged from the water in. That’s correct, the Novalon™ construction is waterproof and beach ready. Similarly, where many sandals are constructed with multiple pieces attached together, the Telic flip flops I tested are made from a single mold, meaning there is nothing to come apart. If you enjoy wearing sandals and are looking for a comfortable, durable pair that you wear from the beach to a walk about town, I recommend giving Telic a try.
