Purps Fuel and Hydro Sports Drinks

Tommy Bahama Paddleboard & Ocean Festival at the Santa Monica Pier - Purps Review

Purps was founded by World Champion surfer Kelly Slater, Dr. Chris Schaumburg and designer PM Tenore. The trio of innovators share a common passion for health advocacy and came together to develop a unique brand of sports beverages which combine the best attributes from nature and science to promote a healthy lifestyle. Promoted by the catchphrase “Purps it Forward” and recently popularized by Gold Medal winning stand up paddle athlete Candice Appleby at the ISA World Games in Sayulita, Mexico, the Newport Beach, California-based beverage company produces a range of low-calorie, organic sports beverages designed to meet the needs of athletes across a variety of disciplines.

SUP Examiner’s Take

We received some product samples from Purps when we attended the 2015 SUP Fiesta at Bolsa Chica State Beach last month. While we are not positioned to attest to the scientific benefits from consuming the combination of natural ingredients found in their products, we can speak to the results based on our limited sampling of the beverages.

Starting off with the Purps Fuel before a 1.25 hour paddling session, the beverage was clean, light and refreshing. It lacked any burn or aftertaste and while it is a carbonated beverage, it has a mild carbonation – just enough to tickle your throat as you wash it down. We felt refreshed and alert and didn’t experience an energy spike or subsequent crash. Simply a mild, balanced, “ok, I’m ready to go” sensation.

Post paddling workout we rehydrated with the Purps Hydro. We’re normally not a fan of coconut water – hard to believe, but no we’re not on that bandwagon – but, the base liquid of 20% organic coconut water is non-offensive when enhanced by the all natural flavors of the proprietary Organic Purple Life Formula. As with the Purps Fuel, the Purps Hydro has a clean, light and refreshing taste. The beverage is non-carbonated and the blend of electrolytes, essential vitamins and carbohydrates came across as the perfect match for post workout hydration and enabled us to feel as if we recovered at a faster rate than if we were to consume water on its own.

If you are in the market for a premixed, off the shelf line of sports beverages to complement your stand up paddling, we recommend giving Purps Fuel and Purps Hydro a try. It just might be for you.

Disclosure: PURPS provided SUP Examiner with samples of their products, however, the opinions expressed are our own.
