La Jolla Shores Invitational: What to Expect on Race Day

by admin

The annual La Jolla Shores Invitational marks the second event of the SoCal Racing Series – often known as the Winter Series. Winter in Southern California is relative and visitors from the upper Mid West might be forgiven if they think we’re in a state of perpetual summer. November is generally reasonably warm and sunny during the day with highs in the mid 70s along the coast a realistic possibility.

La Jolla Shores is one of the gems on the map of paddling locations in California. Scenic cliffs pocketed with caves line the southern end of the area as the expansive stretch of sand extends several miles to the north. Arrive early and plan to stay all day enjoying the beach and ample green space.

The grassy park behind the beach is flat and perfectly suited for staging paddle craft of all makes and models. There is sufficient parking nearby, but as always, there earlier you arrive, the better a spot you are likely to secure. From the grassy staging area it is just a short stroll across the sand to the launch point on the beach.

La Jolla Shores is an ocean race and while there is a water start, paddlers will still have to navigate their craft through the surf zone on the way out and back in at the conclusion of the race. The event features three races:

  1. Grom race

  2. Short course

  3. Long course

The exact courses and lengths will be determined on race day to best accommodate the current ocean conditions. Registration opens at 7:00 in the morning. Hope to see you there!
