Essential Paddling: SUP Isn’t Dead…It’s Just on Vacation

by admin

The fabled Molokai to Oahu OC-1 Solo paddling race may have been blown out earlier in May, but conditions are looking favorable for the Maui Jim Molokai Challenge Presented by Shaw and Partners coming up on May 26, 2019. Looking for insights to the action, a few social media accounts we recommend following are @_michaelbooth, @vaikobi, and @oscarchalupsky

APP World Tour Hits London

The Association of Paddlesurf Professionals (APP) world tour swept through London, England this past week. For the uninitiated, the APP world tour is the official professional tour for standup paddle racers. Athletes took part in a range of completions on and around the historic Thames River in the heart of London. SUP racing may be dying out in the United States, but American women are keeping the sport alive overseas and put on a dominating performance on the Thames.

Bring your own context

SUP racing is tough business. Traveling overseas to a SUP race is even tougher.

DON’T USE YOUR ENERGY TO WORRY.⠀ USE YOUR ENERGY TO BELIEVE.⠀ Its a #WishfulWednesday… sometimes trying to go after goals and dreams is challenging due to forces outside of our control. I’m having to make a last minute choice to try and fly with my #SUP to London for the @APPWorldTour. The airline might not take it. I have an inflatable packed as a backup 😉 Because, hell, I’ll race no matter what.⠀ In the mean time…⠀ I’m trying REALLY HARD to not focus on what could happen if they don’t take it, and instead focusing all of my energy and intention on believing that things could go right. I’m visualizing a smooth flowing process where I arrive with the board in one piece. 🤑 We’ll see how that goes! PLEASE TAKE MY BOARD TODAY @AMERICANAIR, I’ll be forever grateful. April and her board made it to the APP event in London, finishing second overall.

It may be too early to make that call. Regardless, I not sure anyone can match Booth’s accomplishments for the year to date.

Standup Paddling Featured on the Cover of the New Yorker!

Here’s an excerpt from the cover story in the May edition of the New Yorker by Françoise Mouly.

With the arrival of Memorial Day, New Yorkers look forward to spending more time outdoors, even if only during their commutes. This week’s cover, by Malika Favre, shows an unusual twist to the daily grind. Under the Brooklyn Bridge, a lone figure on a standup paddle board travels between Brooklyn and Manhattan. We talked to the artist about how the image came to life. Have you ever tried a standup paddle board? It’s something that I have been seeing more and more when I go on holiday. There’s something very peaceful and calming in watching someone on a standup board. I have tried it myself, and once I got the balance right I was actually surprised by how relaxing it was—almost meditative. What’s the genesis of this image? Did you walk on the Brooklyn Bridge and thought it would be nice to take a shortcut on the water? I remember reading about a man paddling on the Hudson River last summer while wearing a suit, and the image stayed with me. It somehow feels like the perfect way to avoid the hassle and stress of the usual commute on a bright summer day. When someone does something unexpected like this, it’s a breath of fresh air and ingenuity that is worth celebrating.
