Hammocks are a hot item these days and it’s easy to see why. They are relaxing and few things conjure up the thought of a warm, beachside location than a hammock strung between two trees. I recently took a short road trip from Los Angeles to San Diego for an outrigger event and tacked on a couple of days to the front end to do some SUP surfing along the way south. One of the things I was looking forward to trying out was my new Rallt Hammock.
Hammocks have come a long way over the years. I remember the nylon mesh weave of the camping hammock I used in the 90s on trips to the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It was functional enough for its time, but was pretty rustic when compared to new packable hammock designs from Rallt.
On my list of places to surf was Doheny State Beach in Dana Point. Home to my favorite surf shop, Infinity Surfboards, Doheny has a fairly consistent soft, rolling wave which I knew was perfect for surfing my Infinity SUP “New Deal”. I also knew there are several clusters of palm trees along the grassy section just beyond the sand at Doheny which would be perfect for setting up the hammock.

As someone who regularly heads into the mountains on backpacking trips I appreciate having durable, lightweight gear that is easily packable. This added an additional small stuff sack to the mix, but still very packable. Considering I was traveling in my Jeep and car camping along the way, adding the two items to my gear bag for the trip was not an inconvenience.
The Rallt hammock is constructed with 70D ripstop nylon and triple stitched seams. All together, it has the capacity to hold up to 400 lbs. More than adequate to float my 5’6”, 150 lbs frame aloft. The stuff sack is built-in, so you’ll never lose it. Another great aspect of the design is its generous size: 10′ x 4′ 7″. Large enough to hold two if you’re lucky enough to warrant such an occasion. The hammock comes with everything you need to quickly set it up in just a couple of minutes. All in all, the hammock was every bit as relaxing between surf sessions as I had hoped. Don’t leave home without one!
