The brand may now be owned by a group of overseas investors, but a visit to SIC’s birthplace on the island of Maui will quickly take you back to the roots of stand up paddling. As the name suggests, the iconic shop on Haliimaile Rd. sells one thing and one thing only – SIC boards and paddles. Located a mere 15 minutes from the water and some of the world’s most revered downwind paddling runs, SIC Maui Custom is a no-frills, old school haunt perfect for downwind paddling enthusiasts. The shop’s services include selling custom and production SIC boards, repairs and rentals. Performance lessons and guided tours are available by appointment. They do not sell food or beverages, but a range of options are available nearby.
Paddling Scene
The dominant clientele are downwind paddlers – some of whom plan their entire vacations around a visit to the shop to rent a board for a dash down Maui’s famous Maliko Run. The Maliko Gulch is the best place to launch for downwind runs. Paddlers may also launch from Baldwin Beach Park. There are a couple places to grab a good drink and eat some great food in the area. Haliimaile General Store is the closest. Makawao town is just a seven minute drive away and has several great restaurants.
Nearby Events
The world’s major downwind races all take place just a stone’s throw away from SIC Maui Custom. Olukai (The name of a sandal company, not an island) and Paddle Imua take place each May, while Maui to Molokai and Molokai to Oahu occur later in the summer.
