The inaugural Ultimate Waterman’s Challenge (UWC) debuts in Los Cabos August 24-27, 2017, thanks to the joint efforts of The Cape, a Thompson Hotel; pro surfers Tim Curran and Rob Machado; Los Cabos local and adventure/tour operator Alex Vidal of InCabo Travel; the Los Cabos Tourism Board; and Quiksilver. A first-of-its-kind sporting, music, and eco festival,UWC celebrates “the best things in life,” as described by event Co-Founder Tim Curran, including adventure, music, wellness, and philanthropy.
The four-day lineup ranges from water sports exhibitions with industry pros (including the marquee US vs. Mexico surf competition, aerial surf shows, spearfishing challenges, and stand-up paddle boarding) to live music (played atop The Cape’s signature sixth-story rooftop lounge). Devoted to preserving the natural environs it calls home, UWC commits to recycle, compost, or sustainably manage 100% of the trash accumulated from the event; utilize a cycling or “pedal power” program to support energy needs and reduce the festival’s carbon footprint; and use digital options for 90% of the event’s promotional materials. The festival commences in a volunteer-led beach cleanup effort. A portion of the proceeds from event sponsors will go to support local Cabo charity, DIF (Desarrollo Integral de la Familia), dedicated to serving special needs children and families.
