As most stand up paddlers will readily attest, paddling is not just an activity or something fun to do, it is a lifestyle both on and off the water. The camaraderie among paddlers and opportunities to travel and explore new horizons with groups of friends is one of the best aspects of the world’s fastest growing water sport. This is buoyed by the phenomenon that SUP has been the inspirational catalyst behind the migration of more people to the outdoor lifestyle, which in turn has spun off new markets for products which were historically rooted in more terrestrial domains. With this newfound modernity in mind, we’ve selected three of our favorite pieces of great gear which we feel embody the spirit of the 21st Century paddling lifestyle.
Bamboo-Merino Henley Shirt from ShowerPass
Bringing together two popular and highly functional natural fibers, this is a modern take on the classic Henley Shirt perfectly suited for pre and post paddling engagements. The blended bamboo-merino fabric makes the shirt lightweight and breathable, lending it for use as a warm up top, base layer or stylish apres paddle attire. Designed with a fitted-athletic cut, the ShowePass Henley is a great piece of apparel for anyone leading an active lifestyle. The sleeves feature thumb loops for added coverage and UPF 50+ protection, while the performance inspired seams with flat lock stitching and elongated panels give the shirt comfort and eliminate chafe points. The cut and styling makes this a fantastic alternative to a sweatshirt for activities in cooler weather by reducing the amount of bulk while retaining all the comfort and warmth. All in all, this is quite possibly the most performance oriented Henley on the market. paddling lifestyle

We met the folks from Oregon’s Fifty/Fifty Bottles earlier this fall at the Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City and have been using one of their bottles ever since. Why, because it works great and looks good. Designed with rugged durability, Fifty/Fifty Bottles are a modern take on the traditional thermos. Their double-walled-vacuum insulated construction keep liquids hot or cold for hours and the selection of colors, tops and sizes ensures you can find the right bottle for any occasion. The double-walls mean you will not experience any condensation on the outside of the bottle – e.g. sand and dirt will not cling to your bottle. Drinking from reusable bottles helps reduce the amount of trash in the environment (many SUP events on the West Coast have banned participants from bringing single use, plastic bottles) and with their long lasting stainless steel construction, Fifty/Fifty Bottles are probably the last water bottle you’ll ever have to buy. Custom laser etching is available, so why not outfit your team or club with a set emblazoned with your own logo. Sizes range from 18 oz to 64 oz and they also make a version specific for use as a 750ml wine growler. What’s not to like?!

The hammock is quick to set up and can be configured with or without the rain fly while the integrated no-see-um netting keeps insects on the outside where they belong.
